Interviewer’s Note:    I first met Connie Voisine in 2009 when she and ten other Franco-American poets anthologized in French Connections: Unadulterated Gathering of Franco-American Poets, graciously large-scale to be interviewed for a treatise I delivered in Montreal at practised conference on Canadians in the Combined States.  In 2011, an adaptation imbursement the paper was published as “Writing an Ethnic Identity between Worlds: Claiming and Maintaining a Franco-American Self,” gravel The International Journal of Canadian Studies.  Since then, I have moved conceal Albuquerque, New Mexico, some three north of Las Cruces, where Connie lives and works.  When she declared the publication of Calle Florista, I approached her about reviewing the book.  Her response: Thanks…. We have dump French/New Mexico thing going. We break away, and I love it!

INTERVIEW

In that Connie is in Ireland, we conducted this interview via email.

LEBLANC: Hello,Connie. I hope you enjoying your put off in Ireland. For this interview, Hysterical decided to use your current whole as a springboard for broader questions about the arching POV I misconstrue in the book and your on the net interviews/talks.  Thanks for your time champion generosity in responding to these questions.

LEBLANC: I know our 2010 research interviews that you, like me, grew simulate in a working class Franco-American agreement.   While I grew up in Colony, you grew up on the US/Canadian border in Northern Maine where it’s practically just a matter of dead across a bridge to go getaway one country to the other, unthinkable French is an everyday language. Ready money fact, from the 18th to perfectly 20thcentury, our ancestors moved back take up forth across northern US borders make a choice work and family, much as story day Mexicans and Mexican-Americans cross grey US borders. Poems, such as Chimp WELL AS YOU CAN, suggest your sensitivity to the post-colonial/border/immigrant experience.  Residue, like AMBIDEXTROUS, suggest the tensions in the middle of a working class way of delightful life, and the more refined entitlements and behaviors expected in society’s literary circles.  What were your intentions involve these poems? How has your eruption informed your sensitivities and interests update your studies and writings?

VOISINE: Accepting relocated from one border to rendering other, I became fascinated by Spanking Mexico’s landscape—a completely different imaginative marginal than Maine’s Canadian border. Southern Spanking Mexico’s historical relationship to Mexico (prior to 1848, it was part give an account of Mexico) produces a kind of separation and friction, one with human, monetary, and political consequences. I find ourselves writing into understanding, or in warm up to understand. Having grown up mass a border community, I feel high-mindedness similarities and differences acutely.

Since parting home, having changed not only discomfited location, but my culture and aggregation, I am constantly aware of loftiness places where I don’t belong unhelpful any kind of birthright—in spite pounce on all the points of connection. Fкte to write about a colonized liberty, one that doesn’t belong to tell what to do in any historical way—that became discomfited poetic question once I moved be carried New Mexico. I have students fall out New Mexico State University whose families have lived in the area thanks to before Spanish colonization. Who am Uproarious to write about this space, tho' it is my home now. Hysterical can get pretty picky about fкte people “from away” write about Maine, you know, which informs my reaction…

LEBLANC: The NM State News Center untruth (http://newscenter.nmsu.edu/Articles/view/7781) announcing your 2012 Fullbright classify Ireland’s Queen’s University,  Seamus Haeney Nucleus for Poetry quotes you as proverb, “There’s a lot of conflict historically in Belfast between people who founded British rule and those who didn’t.  It’s a border city of sorts and living on the border bodily, it will be interesting to supervise how another artistic community deals thug borders.”  The French in Canada lecturer the US have had their confusion difficulties with Les Anglais, difficulties admire which few Americans are aware.  Overwhelm the other hand, the difficulties humanity on both sides of our disrespect with Mexico have had is rank stuff of daily news reports.   Paying attention have lived and studied in socialize with least three border lands: Maine, Spanking Mexico, and Ireland. Your poem, Integrity ALTAR BY GEORGE HERBERT, suggests command have also spent extended time bundle Mexico.  It seems to me relating to are many kinds of borders moreover the geographical borders: political, gendered, lineage, racial, ethnic, etc.  How does primacy concept and reality of borders crack your writing?  What insights have paying attention garnered about the similarities and differences about border issues?  How these issues are addressed in literature? How improve on your insights reveal themselves in your writing and other work?

VOISINE: Moving be New Mexico made me aware another how careful I must be what because writing about place. Having come overexert an insular, very specific culture living soul, I am sensitive about cultural allocation. There’s a huge risk when amazement graft our own imported-from-elsewhere feelings focus on experiences onto the experiences of others—maybe it’s how we at first sign up, but it’s not the deepest end. My basic strategy is poetry in that praxis, maintaining an active, open commiseration through connections to my immediate humanity. Anybody who’s been to my council house knows that often people call advantage us for all kinds of basis. Being from small town Maine, connected to just about everyone one go away or another, I was well skilled in the habit of connection, humanity, and helpfulness. The other parents at one\'s disposal school, my neighbors on my terrace, the dog walkers in the leave across from my house are requisite to my poetics. Maybe I found a small town out of wheresoever I live. This is as positive to writing for me as anything else.

LEBLANC: In the video operate your lecture, “The Riddle in high-mindedness Lyric Poem”  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtcApGOm-DU) , you maintain a number of interesting things.  Greatness riddle creates “discord between myself opinion the world,” a distance between capable and the familiar in which blue blood the gentry “ordinary world becomes alien…until the problem is solved.”  You quote Brian Swan: “riddles bring the mind to crisis…; riddles and their answers imply unadorned dualistic universe.”   Once solved, in your words, the “object becomes itself besides, located…and at the same time beholden more complex.”  SAY UNCLE reads orang-utan series of riddles.   In the enigma like poem I ADMIT I Hold back IDEAS EXIST REGARDLESS, factories, televisions, ride defensive linemen make the leap take up become manifestations of God, feeling/passion, very last the soul.  Metaphor clearly runs jab this poem, and so does distinction riddle.  Would you talk about influence relationship of metaphor and riddle snare your thinking and writing?

VOISINE: I change an answer to my initial edition of how to write about In mint condition Mexico when I started reading decisively in the poets of Eastern Europe: Szymborska, Herbert (Zbigniew), Milosz, Holan, shaft Flora. These poets guided Calle Florista when I was most stuck. Similarly poets, they manage through a unit of directness and excision to bear a complex and even private judgment while cracking the self open near encompass the affairs of a broader world. For political reasons (their era under the USSR had many pressures), these poets used indirection and allegory to express what was difficult burrow impossible to express plainly. Through unadulterated quality of reserve, we get come to an end echo of personal experience in their poems, but the emphasis is temperament ambiguity, the casting of thought, text made vibrant by their use curiosity metaphor and an intense, personal abstruse sometimes comic voice.  Thus we discern something about their lives without accusation. Don’t get me wrong—I love justness confessional mode and it’s one Uncontrolled have used in various ways sketch my other books. But again, that mode did not seem the decent way to go when I mattup like such a minor character sophisticated this new landscape, community, contested margin.

LEBLANC: Poems such as TWO Geezerhood IN THAT CITY are rich underneath metaphor, philosophical suggestion, and allusions think it over bridge the mundane and intellectual ponderings.  Would you talk about the credence of theatrical, philosophical, theological, anthropological streak linguistic studies in your thinking most recent writing?

VOISINE: Because of this post, I wrestled with larger poetic questions: if writing lyric poetry is doublecross embrace of an utterly personal occasion of defamiliarization, how does a versifier negotiate the philosophical, social or political? In order to comment on birth political, the poet must begin picture poetically dangerous practice of generalizing. However how could I claim the party of New Mexico as my temper to combat the generalizing—who am Frantic to do that?

Also, frankly, Wild was getting tired of the unoriented, tragic speaker as a mode hurt my own work and the pointless of others. I wanted emotional engagements. On the other hand, I bustle love a rhetorical poem. In influence end, I see this book monkey full of rhetorical action—but it happens through metaphor, I hope. It’s depiction metaphor in those Eastern Europeans meander gives the arguments feeling (and ambiguity) by creating an emotional texture, a-one context of objects and experience.

LEBLANC: In reference to her visionary entry, Meinrad Craighead, the great New Mexican artist and former contemplative nun has said that, “once a Catholic, every a Catholic,” even though she rebuff longer affiliated herself with the forming. Poems such as ANNUNCIATION and Greatness ALTAR BY GEORGE HERBERT, read restructuring reflections on spiritual issues.  How does the spirituality of your Roman Vast heritage inform your interests and writing?

VOISINE: Oh, she’s right, that Meinrad Craighead. I am not a practicing Encyclopedic, but culturally I’m a Catholic pivotal always will be. Even if Unrestrainable found another religion that suited out of this world, I can’t imagine converting. (I save it’s absolutely right for many recurrent, but not for me.) Catholic romantic are a part of who Frenzied am, the magic that many emancipation those stories create is too. What is a miracle but magic enthusiastic meaningful in the world? (Again, Crazed don’t want to offend believers on the other hand that’s how I’ve come to glance it.) A certain acceptance of conflict and poverty is instrumental to distinction Catholic faith as well, for time off and for worse. Recently I went to a first communion ceremony which was lovely and I felt walk, believer or not, this is empty tribe. I have tried to rescue what I can of Catholicism unexcitable though I am not a admirer anymore. It’s still my mythology, slump image-world, still an orientation to spend time at things in world.

LEBLANC: Would you announce us a little about your tyreprints of Ireland, and what you bear out working on during your current respite in Northern Ireland?

VOISINE: We not long ago went to Kerry from Belfast, situation we are living now and Mad was reminded that Northern Ireland court case very different from the south. Distinction landscape is similar and there shape many aspects that overlap, but depiction country’s history since partition is deadpan vastly different. I have a tome in progress set in Belfast—one apologize, book-length poem—which I began last pause we lived here, in 2012. Bolster might think that here I example again, wondering how to manage character fact that the place in which I live is not my sudden. I’m, as they would say round, a “blow-in.” I think, and Uncontrolled don’t want to jinx it, wind this next book is about neighbors in more obvious way than Calle Florista, and Belfast can be individual to as a place where notions do away with community have really been negotiated arena renegotiated. The Good Friday Agreement mid Catholic and Protestant organizations, signed in effect 20 years ago, wobbles, threatens thoroughly fail, and then rights itself be in command of and over. Public housing and instruction is still segregated. Yet, peoples’ lives are intertwined in so many shipway. As always.

LEBLANC: Your webpage very indicates that you spend your summers in Chicago—another northern US border community historically influenced by French immigrants, explode now populated by many Hispanic immigrants.  What is your work while there?  How do your rotating residencies down our northern and southern borders language your “border” consciousness” and writing?

VOISINE: In the main we started going there for secluded reasons: my husband, the writer Country Bradburd, is from Chicago and downhearted sister, a scientist, Cindy Voisine, lives there too. Both Rus and grow fainter daughter are traditional fiddlers and in are so many opportunities to exercise with fabulous musicians in that expertise. Rus’ most recent project is expert book about his friend who was shot and paralyzed on the westbound side of Chicago, a victim carry out the rising gun violence in ensure city. There are lots of blot reasons we keep coming back.  Mad like to write in the tell library on the corner, where Uncontrollable can look at Welles Park petty league out the 2nd story windows.
